Formalism is a school of literary criticism and literary theory having mainly to do with structural purposes of a particular text. It is the study of a text without taking into account any outside influence. Formalism rejects (or sometimes simply "brackets," i.e., ignores for the purpose of analysis) notions of culture or societal influence, authorship, and content, and instead focuses on modes, genres, discourse, and forms.

In another definition, Formalism or formal linguistics is the study of the abstract forms of language and their internal relations. It fixes on the forms of languages as evidence of the universals without considering how these forms function in communication and the ways of social life in different communities.

In literary theory, formalism refers to critical approaches that analyze, interpret, or evaluate the inherent features of a text. These features include not only grammar and syntax but also literary devices such as meter and tropes.

Tahun 2013 telah usai. Tahun dimana negeri ini diwarnai dengan hiruk pikuk dan tingkah polah politisi dan partai politik. Ingar bingar ini tidak lepas dengan tahun politik dan akan diselenggarakannya ‘pesta demokrasi’. Memasuki tahun 2014, terhitung empat bulan lagi, negara ini memiliki hajart besar yang bernama pemilihan umum untuk anggota legislatif. Dari pemilu legislatif inilah yang nantinya  memunculkan calon presiden. Sekalipun panggung politik nasional sudah mulai riuh dengan nama-nama bakal calon presiden dan wakil presiden, namun partai politik harus tetap berhitung dengan perolehan suara.

Suka tidak suka, globalisasi bukan hanya mempersempit dunia namun juga mempengaruhi kehidupan politik di negeri ini. Geliat kampanye yang dilakukan oleh caleg sudah ditabuh dari awal 2013. Berbagai media digunakan guna menunjang popularitas dan mendongkrak eligibilitas partai yang diusungnya. Media yang menjadi sarana mereka menjual janji pun beragam, dari baliho, banner, iklan di media elektronik ataupun cetak, bahkan di jejaring sosial. Model blusukan ke kampung atau pasar tradisional pun sekarang menjadi ngetrend.

Memasuki bulan Desember, seperti adat, curah hujan di wilayah Indonesia semakin tinggi. Akibatnya, hampir semua media baik cetak maupun elektronik memberitakan berbagai fenomena alam yang menggila di berbagai tempat. Banjir, tanah longsor, angin puting beliung menjadi headline yang panas untuk diberitakan. Fenomena alam semacam ini telah banyak memakan korban, baik material ataupun nyawa. Menurut laporan BNPB (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana) pada bulan september, dari Januari hingga September tercatat 886 kejadian bencana alam yang merenggut 639 korban jiwa dan lebih dari 2.900.000 orang menderita penyakit akibat bencana dan mengungsi.
